One Word 2012

The last hours of 2011 are whispering by, are you still thinking about your One Word? I suspect I have found mine though it needs a bit more time to cook.

I'll give you a few options:
  • Humility
  • Commit
  • Surrender

These are all, in some way, built off of One Word 2011, Trust, a work that is in no way complete. I've wondered if it is necessary for each Word to build off of the ones before it, if it is a reflection of my AR tendencies or simply a natural product of a progressive life. What do you think? Do your words build on one another?

Each of these words also represent a fairly significant work in me at the present, but I'm not sure if that is something that will carry through for the whole year. Hmm.

What are some of your options?

  1. I started doing "one word" in 2009...God gave me the word "renew", and I have to say it remained my word for 3 years. I probably broke a rule or two by not moving on, but I just didn't feel ready. So, about the words building on eachother-I don't know. I'm still praying for my word for 2012. I felt like I clearly heard God tell me "renew" (it was completely different than the words I had in mind) so I am hoping he will do the same with my new word.

  2. I've really been praying about my word for 2012. I did have a word for 2011 that I picked before the new year, and then almost forgot about it. I love the idea, and want to purposely pray/purse my word for the coming year, and allow God to work in it.

  3. I haven't intended my words to build off eachother. It isn't until after I know my word that I make connects. I wrote about this over at Compassion Family, but my word for 2010 was Love. Basic, simple. Then my word for 2011 was Quiet. Almost immediately God gave me Zeph. 3:17 and in that verse is says "He will quiet you with his love". I loved the double play on my words. This year as I was thinking about my word, Listen came to me pretty quickly. Now that I look at it, I feel like I've been quieted by His love and I'm ready to listen. So in my case, the words have been connected and built on each other. But I don't think they necessarily have to.

  4. Rebecca, I don't know I'd I'd call it cheating:) The one word essay written by Dan Britton warns against just using the same word when you feel like you didn't "do a good job" with it the last year but that doesn't sound like it applies to you. This is just a tool anyway, its not gospel. So if you think God is continuing the same work through "renew," I'd say that's exciting :)

Hez, that's really what this whole thing is about, prayer & being purposeful, regardless if you're doing "one word" specifically or something else. So that's awesome :) Don't worry about the timing, I didn't really have mine until mid January :)

Jill, I love "listen!" That's definitely going to be something that comes up for me too. I'm thinking that the less of an agenda I have going into the search (i.e. trying to build on last year) the better. I think that its just how God works, He's a god of process :) I'm checking out your stuff on commission family!
