Live58 Challenge

This video was made about 4 weeks ago, right after I got back from my Haiti trip with Compassion International. Compassion is involved with Live58, a coalition of nonprofit organizations dedicated to ending poverty by practicing a "True Fast." True fasting, as described in Isaiah 58, is characterized by loosing the bonds of wickedness, undoing heavy burdens, letting the oppressed go free, breaking every yoke, sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the poor cast-out ones into your home and covering the naked.

More than anything it is a call to love and have compassion on one another. This passage, the Live58 ministry, and my trip to Haiti raised some questions about how we respond to pain and poverty.

  1. Sarah - I really appreciate your thoughts and you've given me some new things to mull over.

"extend your soul" - what translation is that? I'm not a big fan of NIV, but it's what I know best and it says "spend yourselves". I think it would be fun to look this chapter up in several translations and really dig in to the meaning.

  2. You're right it would!

I was reading in the NKJV. I did a little digging after I recorded this video and found a few different translations: "draw out yourself" (KJV) "pour yourself out" (ESV) "give yourself" (NASB)

The Hebrew word is derived from "puwq" (pook?) which has to do with falling or wobbling.

Its a weird word and a weird way of saying that we should help the hungry, which is why it grabs my attention.

Let me know if you find anything!

  3. Sarah, I loved your post. I especially loved watching you as you processed through Isaiah 58. Your desire to dive into a deeper understanding of God and His heart is so evident and encouraging. Thank you for sharing!
